چکیده

It is well known that chaos is a central feature of human locomotion (Buzzi et al., 2003; Dingwell et al., 2000). A chaotic gait pattern means that the lower extremity kinematics fluctuate from one step to the next with a deterministic pattern. Historically, fluctuations in the gait pattern were considered to be random noise or error in the output of the nervous system. However, recent investigations have suggested the contrary and have indicated that the chaotic structure present in the lower extremity kinematics may be related to the health of the neuromuscular system (Buzzi et al., 2003; Dingwell et al., 2000).

Preliminary evaluation of prototype footwear and insoles to optimise balance and gait in older people

BACKGROUND Footwear has the potential to influence balance in either a detrimental or beneficial manner, and is therefore an important consideration in relation to falls prevention. The objective of this study was to evaluate balance ability and gait patterns in older women while wearing prototype footwear and insoles designed to improve balance. METHODS Older women (n = 30) aged 65 - 83 year...

Effects of Indoor Footwear on Balance and Gait Patterns in Community-Dwelling Older Women.

BACKGROUND Footwear worn indoors is generally less supportive than outdoor footwear and may increase the risk of falls. OBJECTIVE To evaluate balance ability and gait patterns in older women while wearing different styles of indoor footwear: a backless slipper and an enclosed slipper designed to optimise balance. METHODS Older women (n = 30) aged 65-83 years (mean 74.4, SD 5.6) performed a ...

Diabetic peripheral neuropathy and gait: does footwear modify this association?

BACKGROUND Gait-related fall risk is the leading cause of mortality among patients with diabetes, especially those older than 65 years. Deterioration in balance and loss of protective sensation in lower extremities contribute significantly to fall risk in patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). This study aimed to explore the impact of neuropathy and foot ulcer on gait. METHODS We...

Altering footwear type influences gait during level walking and downhill transitions.

The purpose of our study was to determine if altering the insoles within footwear or walking barefoot, as an attempt to increase or decrease cutaneous stimuli, would improve dynamic balance during a hill-walking task. We hypothesize that compared with foam insoles or iced bare feet, textured insoles or bare feet will result in greater speeds, longer step lengths, narrower step width, shorter st...

Influence of footwear and equipment on stride length and range of motion of ankle, knee and hip joint.

PURPOSE Footwear and equipment worn by military personnel is of importance for them to be able to meet the physical demands specific to their profession daily activities. The aim of the present study was to investigate by means of gait analysis how army-provided footwear and equipment influence the range of motion of hip, knee and ankle joints as well as stride length. METHODS Thirty-two sold...
